Marymount Manhattan

Today, i decided that i want to try to go to Marymount Manhattan, which is a very prestigious performing arts school in New York City. Before i wanted to just go out and dance, and start dancing so I don't miss my prime.  Now that I thought about it more i think it will benefit me more to go to school for dance. Not necessary for the training, but more for the networking. In the dance world it is all about who you know over what you know every time. No matter what the situation. For example, i got the opportunity to go teach in at a convention. Not only because I'm good, but because i have a good connection with the owner and he know how committed and good i am. With out having connections like that in the dance world you will get nowhere.
Don't get me wrong, if you aren't a good dancer you won't get anywhere. You have to be one of the best, but you also have to do a lot of networking, and have great connections. That's why it is also important to never burn bridges. You never know who knows who and what they can offer.
But back to Marymount. Another great thing about this college is that you can now major in your style of dance. Like contemporary, jazz, or ballet to name a few. They also have classes on a lot of very important aspects of dance, like choreography classes, and improv classes. Improv is one of the most important skills a dancer can have. Without it a dancer would be lost, and would never get an audition. If you are trying out or a show, or a company you will be in the audition and they might tell you to improv for 12 counts of 8. If you just stand there or just do turns and leaps. You will be the first person to be crossed off their list. You have to be able to feel the music and show the teachers what you are trying to portray through the dance.
Marymount is in NYC, which is a great city for dance. There are company's, a bunch of shows, studios, and auditions for just about anything you could want. Having all that right at your finger tips is such an advantage in the dance world. For example, living in Ohio there aren't any dance auditions for anything relevant. If there are any auditions it isn't anything worth while. That is one of the big reason i like Marymount.
One of the downsides is that you can't do any auditions for anything outside of the school while going there, which really stinks. But they set you up so that no when you leave you already have auditions lined up, and know so many people it will be easy to get auditions. Overall i really like Marymount and think it would be a great fit for my lifestyle.
